A Stroke is a 911 emergency. Time is of the upmost importance when it comes to a stroke.
Within the first 1 Second - 32,000 Brain cells die.
In an Ischemic Stroke the next 59 seconds are vital as an additional 1.9 Million brain cells die.
In patients/persons who experience a stroke, as brain cells die, it can be incredibly difficult to relearn basic life functions such as walking, talking, eating and fine motor skills.
The acronym we use for a stroke is BE FAST:
B - Balance (balance issues, vertigo)
E - Eyesight (blurred vision, sudden vision loss/changes)
F - Facial Drooping (one side of the face is drooping or paralyzed)
A - Arm Weakness (weak limbs, tingling in limbs, one side of body paralyzed, unable to lift arms above head)
S - Speech (slurred speech, mental confusion)
T - Time (time to call 911, time is of the essence)
Other stroke symptoms to be aware of:
WATCH OUT FOR SUDDEN
NUMBNESS or weakness of face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
CONFUSION, trouble speaking or understanding speech
TROUBLE SEEING in one or both eyes
TROUBLE WALKING, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
SEVERE HEADACHE with no known cause
